Julie Oak started performing professionally in 1972 with Wisconsin Mime Theater, later starting her own group in San Francisco, Quadrangle Mime Company. In 1976 she joined Ruth Zaporah’s Action Theater, bringing vocal and verbal expression into the picture, and began performing frequently as a solo movement theater improviser. In recent years, Julie has created her own shows, “Obsessed” and “Into the Elsewhere“, part of the Santa Cruz Actor’s Theater season series. She co-directed Santa Cruz movement theater group, Plan B: Improvise, has performed as a guest artist at Cabrillo College, and appeared as a character actress in the works of Nita Little.

Being a natural educator, Julie began teaching mime theater while still in high school. Leading her own classes in movement expression and theater throughout her adult life, she has always delighted in bringing groups into high states of resonance and in cultivating the unique artistry in each individual.
She has been a guest teacher at Cabrillo College, at University of California Santa Cruz, and in improvisation festivals throughout the West Coast.
Currently, Julie leads ongoing class sessions in Santa Cruz, California: “RealPlay MovingTheater” and a women’s movement group, “Sourcing”.

Julie works with individuals, using movement expression for personal transformation and coaching performers. She is an active mentor and skilled director, midwifing original works by local movement theater artists. Julie draws on extensive experience with physical theater, contact improvisation, authentic movement, and body-based therapies.
